Innovative and exciting Language Learning Experiences for children and young people in the rural areas around Galle.
Education is a fundamental right in Sri Lanka as stipulated in the country’s constitution. Sri Lanka’s population had an adult literacy rate of 92.63% in 2015, which is above average by world and regional standards. Schooling is compulsory for children aged 5 to 13 years, however Sri Lanka rural communities are underfunded lacking the facilities and equipment needed.
Two of Sri Lanka’s main sources of income are generated from tourism or working overseas. Both require the ability to speak the English language. Many rural school children can understand and speak basic words in English. However, their comprehension and conversation skills are undeveloped and the students leave school without the English language skills to access anything but low level unstable jobs. The lack of conversational English language skill is a massive social and economic barrier.
Our English Development programme complements the English syllabus used in the Sri Lankan school curriculum. It provides a unique experience for pupils to gain a higher level of English developing key skills such as speaking, reading and comprehension. All the English teaching and Environment conservation programmes are interlinked, encouraging pupils to improve their English language skills alongside protecting the environment. Students are mixed gender and vary in size and age.
Our aims to set realistic goals and achievements for Environment and English through a personalised programme for individual pupils. Such activity will be monitored and evaluated to maximise the success of the programme and the achievements of the students. This English Programme is able to operate in and out of school hours through it’s after school programme. In school hours the volunteers will act as assistants to the Sri Lankan teachers sharing their skills and experience.
